City of Ali

12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Originally named Cassius Clay, boxing superstar and global humanitarian Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville on January 17, 1942.

It was in Louisville where he honed his ability as a boxer and where he returned after winning Gold in the 1960 Rome Olympics. He often returned to the city after capturing the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World, and it is in Louisville that “The Greatest” has his final resting place. The city is full of “landmarks” that are the backdrops of the events and experiences that molded Ali into the man the world knew him to be.

Start off your Ali tour with brunch at the award-winning Muhammad Ali Center where you’ll be able to learn about the Louisville Lip’s life and legacy—both as an athlete and an activist. Travel South attendees will get to step inside the Vault of Archives for a special presentation of Ali artifacts which are not on display to the public.

Follow in the Footstep of Greatness with a driving tour that starts at Ali’s childhood home, where guests will be greeted by a family friend to hear personal stories about Ali’s childhood. Next stop is the historic Brown Hotel, home to an iconic Ali memory and the famed Kentucky Hot Brown. The tour of Ali’s hometown will conclude at Cave Hill Cemetery for a moment of reflection and remembrance.
