Experience the Dog Days of Autumn in South Carolina

While “fall” may conjure up images of fall foliage carpeting rolling hills, spiced pumpkin lattes and bundling up by the season’s first fire, along the coast of South Carolina, fall is even cooler. This fall, plan a weeklong retreat on the Hammock Coast, where you can experience a quiet, relaxing beach vacation away from the crowds, and enjoy autumn fun with the coast’s freshest seafood, a stay at a haunted beachfront bed & breakfast, and experience a variety of fall festivals.

  • Check out the Marshwalk in Murrells Inlet, a waterfront boardwalk where the bars and restaurants like Wicked Tuna and Drunken Jack’s have some of best seafood around, along with freshly harvested oysters.
  • Stay at the Pelican Inn (c. 1840), a beachfront bed & breakfast, where you can unplug and enjoy the serene Lowcountry scenery. If you’re looking for a little bit of a thrill, legend has it that two canine ghosts haunt the property. (As the story goes, the former owner had a pair of Boston terriers, one sadly perished while swimming out to sea to save a drowning boy, and the other died of loneliness.)
  • Experience a host of festivals, like the Harvest Home Weekend at Brookgreen Gardens, where you can experience fall traditions such as pumpkin painting and hayrides. In late October, check out the waterfront Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, featuring more than 140 classic wooden boats, or plan to spend an evening at Huntington Beach State Park for the Atalaya Fall Festival and Haunted Castle, if you’re seeking some spooky fun.

If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation away from the crowds, where the weather is just right and with a dash of spookiness for some autumn fun, look no further than a fall weekend away on South Carolina’s Hammock Coast.
