Fort Sumter and the Edmondston Alston House
Begin the morning with the International African American Museum (IAAM). The museum documents the journey that began in Africa centuries ago, and still continues today. At our entrance, the African Ancestors Memorial Garden sprawls across the grounds and reflects on the significance of the historically sacred
site of Gadsden’s Wharf—where alongside several others in the Charleston Harbor—an estimated 40% of African captives entered this country. Inside, exhibitions tell the dynamic story of the international African American experience.
After leaving IAAM, you’ll board your boat and get ready for a scenic ride through the historic Charleston Harbor. Arrive at Fort Sumter for a self-guided tour covering one of the most pivotal times in American history. After exploring this national park, you’ll go home changed. You walked the grounds and read the accounts of those who played a role in the Civil War, the most divisive conflict in American history. On return join us for lunch on the City Market and then visit the Edmondston Alston House Constructed nearly 200 years ago, circa 1825, the Edmondston-Alston House presents a unique history of the people, both free and enslaved, who lived and labored on this property. Its collection of furniture, silver and decorative arts, largely original to those who owned the house, constitutes a rich, complex history of Charleston in the 19th century.
