Japanese Delegation Explores the U.S. South with Great Success

The Japanese delegation’s participation in the International Showcase 2024 proved to be a remarkable success, fostering new connections and unveiling exciting tourism opportunities in the Southern U.S. With six key Japanese travel operators participating, the event provided an invaluable platform for cultural exchange and business development.

A Warm Welcome in Atlanta

The delegation, consisting of representatives from Tokyo and Osaka-based travel companies, arrived in Atlanta eager to explore the region’s tourism potential. For half of the delegates, this was their first visit to Atlanta, adding an extra layer of excitement to their participation. Staying at the Signia Hotel by Hilton, they enjoyed the convenience of having meetings, accommodations, and networking opportunities all in one location. Delegates praised the spacious rooms, exceptional service, and the ability to easily return to their rooms for quick breaks between appointments.

Discovering Atlanta’s Suburban Gems

The highlight of the visit was the specially curated Super FAM tour designed exclusively for the Japanese delegation. This immersive experience showcased four unique communities located just 30 minutes outside downtown Atlanta: Brookhaven, Roswell, Sandy Springs, and Gwinnett County. The delegates explored regional cuisine, trendy shopping areas, and local attractions, immersing themselves in the vibrant charm of these communities.

Key highlights included a visit to the Computer Museum of America in Roswell, which deeply impressed the group with its extensive collection of artifacts. Delegates expressed how they “could have spent hours” exploring the exhibits. Additionally, the group’s visit to Suwanee in Gwinnett County was particularly memorable, as they were welcomed by the town’s mayor, who personally joined the tour.

Dining experiences were another standout feature. Delegates praised the Southern family-style lunch at a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand restaurant as a delightful introduction to authentic Southern cuisine. While many raved about the generous portions and flavorful dishes, some mentioned that the sheer abundance of food at each restaurant could feel overwhelming.

Positive Feedback and Future Opportunities

Participants were unanimous in their praise for the Showcase’s professional organization and content-rich programming. The delegation found their scheduled appointments highly productive, with many noting valuable connections made for future business development. Notably, several buyers emphasized their enthusiasm for expanding their tour offerings to include more Southern destinations.

Looking Ahead

Many delegates expressed interest in incorporating Atlanta’s suburban attractions into future itineraries, especially as part of broader educational, agritourism, and cultural experiences. The warm hospitality they encountered throughout the tour left a lasting impression, reinforcing the South’s reputation for genuine warmth and welcome.

This successful FAM tour is expected to inspire a variety of new travel offerings, particularly as Japanese visitors seek unique experiences and authentic cultural encounters. The strong ties established during the Showcase are set to drive increased tourism to Atlanta and its surrounding areas, strengthening international connections and promoting economic growth for the region.

Special thanks to Discover Atlanta, Explore Brookhaven, Visit Roswell, Visit Sandy Springs, and Explore Gwinnett for their world-class hospitality!
