Made in Alabama

Gee’s Bend Quilts – The women of Gee’s Bend—a small, remote, Black community in Alabama—have created hundreds of quilt masterpieces dating from the early twentieth century to the present. The 700 or so inhabitants of this small, rural community are mostly descendants of slaves, and for generations they worked the fields belonging to the local Pettway plantation. Quiltmakers there have produced countless patchwork masterpieces beginning as far back as the mid-nineteenth century, with the oldest existing examples dating from the 1920s. Enlivened by a visual imagination that extends the expressive boundaries of the quilt genre, these astounding creations constitute a crucial chapter in the history of American art. Few other places can boast the extent of Gee’s Bend’s artistic achievement, the result of both geographical isolation and an unusual degree of cultural continuity.

Priester’s Pecans – In 1935 in the small town of Fort Deposit, AL, Mr. Lee C. Priester, owner of a Texaco gas station along the main highway, wanted to offer more than just gasoline to his patrons. He decided to hire a man who would gather the pecans and bring them to the home of Mr. Priester so they could be sold. Soon after, a businessman on his way through Fort Deposit had a special request that the pecans be shelled and then bagged so he could pick them up on his return trip. And so, the Priester Pecan Company began.

Conecuh Sausage – The truly mouthwatering flavor of Conecuh Sausage began in the small town of Evergreen, AL in 1947. This family-owned and operated establishment offers a unique flavor that comes from a special blend of spices, premium quality meats and smoking over a pure hickory fire. Available in different varieties of spice, the one of a kind flavor of Conecuh sausage will leave you wanting more.

Sister Schubert – A staple at most family gatherings, Sister Schubert’s dinner rolls can cause a tiff at dinner tables if there are not enough for everyone. Everyone at the dinner table picks up a Sister Schubert dinner roll. Patricia “Sister” Schubert (known as “Sister” because her older sister couldn’t pronounce her name) was born and raised in Alabama. As a young girl, she learned to express her love for family and friends through cooking with her grandmother. Her grandmother’s most special shared recipe was for her Parker House Rolls—soft, buttery pull-apart rolls— a recipe that had been passed down for five generations through Sister’s family.

Big Bob Gibson White Sauce – nothing says Alabama BBQ more than smoked chicken dipped in the tangy, mouthwatering white sauce from Big Bob Gibson. With locations all throughout north Alabama Big Bob Gibson and his white sauce make for a unique BBQ experience. Whether smoking a turkey, chicken wings or a whole chicken we always recommend white sauce to go with the bird.
