Winter Getaway in South Carolina
With summer travel plans thwarted this year due to COVID and major changes being made at ski resorts, this may be the year for a winter beach vacation. There’s no better place for coastal sun than South Carolina’s gorgeous sandy beaches. Here are a few prime activities just waiting to be discovered along the SC coast this winter:
- Horseback Riding: What’s better than the wind in your hair as you gallop via horseback alongside the gentle ocean waves? Myrtle Beach offers horseback riding experiences from November 1 through February 28.
- Bird Watching: As birds head South for the winter, look up in the South Carolina sky for stellar bird watching. Stop by the 2,500 acre Huntington Beach State Park to see more than 300 species of birds – you may even spot the majestic Bald Eagle during a visit.
- Oysters: The winter months are prime oyster season, and South Carolina’s selection will not disappoint. Visit the state’s only oyster house – Bluffton Oyster Company – to try the season’s freshest bounty.
- Dogs Allowed: Bring your furry friend along to the beach this winter, as it’s the only time of the year where they are allowed off-leash (as long as they are under voice control) for a spirited game of fetch along the shore.
- Gullah/Geechee Culture: Isolated on South Carolina’s Sea Islands for generations, the Gullah/Geechee community has preserved their heritage through culinary, art, music and language. Head to the Gullah Geechee Visitor Center in Beaufort to learn more about this fascinating culture.
